  • Forschungsbereich | Paläoklimadynamik in der Ursprungsregion der Menschheit

Das Chew Bahir Projekt, in dem ich arbeite, untersucht als Teil des internationalen Forschungszusammenschlusses Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project Klimaschwankungen in Ostafrika, um Hypothesen zu den Zusammenhangen von Klimaschwankungen und der Evolution des Menschen zu testen. Als Teil eines grossen Teams versuchen wir diese Umwelt Fluktuationen anhand von Sedimentkernen aus dem Ostafrikanischen Rift zu rekonstruieren.

Das komplexe, meist Standort-spezifische, Verhältnis zwischen Sedimentzusammensetzung und Klimaparametern erschwert die Entschlüsselung von Paläoklimainformationen aus den Sedimentkernen. Die Bestimmung und Analyse von geeigneten Klimaproxys, die zudem durchweg vorhanden sind, ist die Grundvoraussetzung für die Rekonstruktion hochauflösender und kontinuierlicher Klimageschichte. In einem hydrologisch geschlossenen System, wie in Chew Bahir, wird die Zusammensetzung der authigenen Tonminerale und Zeolithe wesentlich durch die Hydrochemie des Paläosees kontrolliert, der wiederum auf Schwankungen im Niederschlag/Verdampfungsverhältnis reagiert. In einer Pilotstudie konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass die Chew-Bahir-Mineral-Zusammensetzungen, insbesondere die sehr reichlich vorhandenen Tonminerale, empfindlich auf Variationen der Paläosalinität und Alkalinität reagieren indem sie ihre Kristallstruktur anpassen. Die Analyse dieser authigenen Minerale sind ein wichtiger Beitrag um das komplexe Verhaltnis zwischen Sedimentzusammensetzung und Klimaparametern zu verstehen und so vergangene Klima variationen rekonstruieren zu können.
