Forschung

  • Forschungsschwerpunkt 1: Mensch-Umwelt Beziehungen (fachwissenschaftlich physisch-geographisch)

Mein Forschungsschwerpunkt im fachwissenschaftlichen physisch-geographischen Bereich konzentriert sich auf Klimarekonstruktionen in einem interdisziplinären Kontext und ist eng mit internationalen sowie trans- und interdisziplinären Großprojekten verbunden. Teil dieser Forschungsaktivitäten sind die Bohrung und Analyse von langen kontinuierlichen Sedimentkernen aus einer der Ursprungsregionen (Äthiopien, Kenia, Tansania) des modernen Menschen um aktuelle Hypothesen über die Wechselwirkung zwischen Mensch und Klima zu testen.

Multi-Proxy-Aufzeichnungen (aus Ostafrika) sind von entscheidender Bedeutung, um Hypothesen darüber zu testen, wie verschiedene Arten von Klimaschwankungen und Umwelttransformationen die Lebensbedingungen zunächst des Menschen in der Vergangenheit verändert und damit möglicherweise zu wichtigen Entwicklungen in der biologischen und kulturellen Evolution sowie der Mobilität des Menschen in der Menschheitsgeschichte beigetragen haben, aber auch unsere Zukunft als Gesellschaft beeinflussen (HESCOR). Aus dieser diachronischen Perspektive lassen sich wichtige Fragestellungen für den Einfluss des aktuellen Klimawandels auf die gegenwärtige und zukünftige  kulturelle Entwicklung des Menschen übertragen: das ist das zentrale Thema des jüngst gestarteten HESCOR Projekts (Cultural Evolution in Changing Climate: Human and Earth System Coupled Research; Profilbildung 2022, MKW NRW), das fakultätsübergreifend an der Universität zu Köln in einer multidisziplinären Struktur Forschung in Mathematik, Machine Learning, Kultur- und Sprachwissenschaften, Archäologie, Meteorologie, Geographie und Didaktik zu einem neuen Wissenschaftsbereich verbindet.

  • Forschungsschwerpunkt 2: Klimabildung & Didaktische Transformation

In meinem Forschungsschwerpunkt Klimabildung & Didaktische Transformation steht die Verknüpfung von aktuellen fachwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen (Mensch-Klima-Beziehungen) und der (Geographie)didaktik im Vordergrund. Dabei geht es auch darum, wie sich die teilweise hochkomplexen und oft fachübergreifenden Inhalte für verschiedene Adressatengruppen (Kinder, Schüler*innen, Geographiestudierende, Lehramtsstudierende, Allgemeinheit) zugänglich machen lassen und welche Methoden und Strategien der didaktischen Transformation geeignet sind.

HESCOR-Teilprojekt 5 (GACD und Education) widmet sich neben dem Aufbau einer interdisziplinären Database (GACD = Global Archaeological Cultural Database), explizit der Entwicklung von Lehr- und Bildungsmaterialien. Dabei wird Outreach & Education als eine weitere Möglichkeit der Profilbildung verstanden, denn die Entwicklung von multidisziplinärem Lehrmaterial erfordert eine didaktische Umgestaltung und ein Höchstmaß an systemischem Denken. Es geht also nicht nur um eine Vereinfachung der Ergebnisse, sondern um eine kritische Reduktion, Verdichtung und Transformation, die eine intensive fakultätsübergreifende Zusammenarbeit erfordert. Didaktisch wertvoll ist hier die strukturierte Dokumentation, Erforschung und Analyse der Metaprozesse und metakognitiven Strategien von Schüler:innen die insbesondere beim Vergleichen (Vergleichen als Methode) dieser sehr unterschiedlichen - da multidisziplinären- Daten die Lernenden vor neue Herausforderungen stellt.

  • Forschungsschwerpunkt 3: Professionalisierung von Lehrkräften

Die Bekämpfung des Klimawandels, als eine der zentralen Herausforderungen unserer Gesellschaft, erfordert fachlich fundierten und zukunftsfähigen Umgang mit den Ursachen und Folgen des anthropogenen Klimawandels. Dies basiert jedoch auf entsprechender Bildung, die derzeit allerdings schwer mit der rasanten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklung Schritt halten kann. Eine besondere Verantwortung kommt damit der Ausbildung von zukünftig Lehrenden in naturwissenschaftlichen Brückenfächern wie z.B. der Geographie zu. Im Kontext von Climate Change Education (CCE), bemühen sich Hochschulen weltweit die Ausbildung von zukünftig Lehrenden an die rasant wachsende Entwicklung des Bedarfs im Bildungssektor und die Notwendigkeit der Professionalisierung in Themenfeldern der BNE, wie z.B. dem Klimawandel  anzupassen.
